Beaded vs Overlap vs Unibead Pool Liners

Compare beaded, overlap and Unibead liner attachments. Check the receiver, pool dimensions and conversion requirements before ordering.
Liner attachment determines replacement fit. Identify beaded, overlap or Unibead. Check the pool’s receiver and frame. Confirm the supplier’s fit instructions. Conceptual illustration.

Beaded, overlap and Unibead describe how a liner attaches near the top of the pool. They do not identify one universal size or quality grade. Choose an attachment compatible with the pool, then confirm all required dimensions.

For replacement, keeping the existing approved arrangement is often the simplest starting point. A conversion needs confirmation from the pool and liner suppliers. Do not buy a different attachment solely because its pattern or advertised price looks better.

How the three arrangements differ

TypeHow it is retainedWhat must match
BeadedA shaped liner edge seats in a receiver trackBead profile, receiver, liner dimensions and wall height
OverlapExtra vinyl passes over the wall and is secured with the specified coping arrangementPool design, liner size and allowed overlap range
UnibeadA compatible liner can use its hook arrangement or be configured for a bead receiverExact model, chosen installation mode and pool dimensions

Swimline describes its Unibead system as usable in either a beaded or a J hook arrangement. The name does not mean it fits every pool. The selected liner must still match the shape, wall height and supporting floor.

Other manufacturers may use different names for convertible or hook profiles. Inspect the actual product instructions. Similar marketing terms do not establish that the attachment is identical.

Identify the current attachment safely

Use the original pool manual, liner order and installation photos first. Inspect an accessible section near the top of the wall without releasing it. A clear photo of the profile can help the supplier identify the system.

A beaded liner seats in a track. An overlap liner usually has material extending over the wall beneath the retaining components. A hook arrangement hangs over the wall using its shaped edge.

Do not remove structural rails from a filled above ground pool merely to obtain a better view. Ask the installer how the particular model can be inspected. An apparently decorative top component may be part of the assembly’s support.

If the liner has already slipped, photograph the loose edge without pulling more free. The out of track guide explains why bead damage and receiver damage are separate issues. A damaged attachment may need repair before a replacement liner is ordered.

Beaded liners depend on the receiver profile

The shaped bead must seat and remain retained in the correct receiver. A generic description such as standard bead is not enough when the existing track is unknown. Match the profile through the pool or liner supplier.

Inspect the track condition during replacement planning. Cracks, deformation or loose sections can compromise a new liner too. A compatible liner does not correct a failed receiver.

Beaded attachment can offer convenient access for replacement on suitable installations. Actual access still depends on coping and deck design. Do not assume every beaded liner can be changed without other work around the perimeter.

Overlap gives adjustment within a defined design

An overlap liner extends over the wall and is held by the specified retaining arrangement. The installer distributes the material and adjusts it within the product’s permitted fit range. That does not make wall height or floor shape irrelevant.

Check how much overlap the product requires and which pool dimensions it supports. A liner intended for one height range should not be stretched to cover another by guesswork. The base and cove must follow the pool’s instructions.

Do not cut away excess material before the manufacturer directs it. Early cutting can remove needed adjustment or compromise retention. The appearance of the pattern border depends partly on correct positioning during installation.

Unibead requires choosing one installation mode

A Unibead liner can provide a hook option or a beaded option when used with compatible hardware. Follow the exact manufacturer’s instructions for configuring that liner. Do not try to engage both attachment arrangements simultaneously.

Some configurations require removing a specified portion of the profile. That cut is irreversible. Confirm the correct mode, receiver and model before modifying anything.

If the instructions are unclear, ask the supplier to identify the relevant diagram for your product. A video showing another brand’s convertible bead may not apply. Leave the liner unmodified while the question is resolved.

Dimensions remain essential with every type

Measure the actual pool rather than the stretched old liner. Above ground stock liners need the correct shape, inside dimensions and wall height. Inground custom liners need additional floor, corner and step measurements.

Swimline’s sizing guidance measures wall height from the wall base to its top, excluding the top rail. That is different from measuring water depth. Interior sand or a cove can also hide the wall base.

Use the liner measurement guide to identify the required reference points. If measurements do not fit a standard size, report the discrepancy. Do not average away a distorted pool shape or assume an expandable liner will solve it.

Attachment type does not establish thickness

Compare the actual material specification separately. A mil is one thousandth of an inch. A gauge label should not be treated as the same numerical measurement without the manufacturer’s specification.

Thickness alone does not establish fit, seam quality or resistance to every type of damage. A thicker liner still needs sound support and correct chemistry. A long warranty title also does not describe every covered cost or the expected service life.

Ask about the specific liner material, warranty coverage and installation requirements after compatibility is confirmed. Keep the answers with the order. Avoid paying for a feature that does not solve the pool’s actual need.

What to confirm before converting

A conversion can require different receivers, coping pieces or access to the wall top. The pool manufacturer should approve the arrangement. It may also change future replacement access.

Ask the supplier to confirm:

  • Pool make, model, shape and wall height.
  • Current attachment and condition of retained hardware.
  • Exact replacement liner and installation mode.
  • Required conversion components and their compatibility.
  • Base, cove and floor profile requirements.
  • Whether any cutting or structural disassembly is involved.
  • Who verifies fit before filling and cutting fitting openings.

Have an installer assess an aging or distorted pool before ordering conversion parts. A different attachment cannot repair a weakened wall. The installation plan must protect the structure as well as the liner.

Order from a complete fit record

Send dimensions, attachment photos and the pool model together. Ask the supplier to confirm the match in writing. Retain the packaging label until installation is complete.

If the new product does not agree with the order, stop before modifying it. Do not attempt to make the wrong liner fit with extra heat or unusual tension. Correct selection is the most efficient way to avoid wrinkles and installation problems later.
