Start with what changed

Did the failure begin after the basket lid was opened, a cleaner was connected, or the pool was reopened? Record that event before changing anything else. It can narrow the search considerably.

After basket service, first check the lid seal and reassembly under the manual’s safe shutdown procedure. After winter, check the documented removal of plugs and restoration of valves. After vacuuming, check the cleaner hose and adapter path rather than assuming the pump itself failed.

Confirm a usable water supply

Check that the pool water level covers the operating suction opening as required. A skimmer drawing air cannot provide an uninterrupted supply. Inspect accessible baskets and confirm that a skimmer weir isn’t stuck in a position that starves the well.

Confirm known valve positions against your normal setup. Don’t rotate unfamiliar valves at random, and don’t run with the return blocked. Pumps installed below the waterline may need different filling and isolation procedures from pumps above it.

Use the manufacturer’s priming procedure once the water path is correct. Respect its run limit and protective shutdowns. Repeated failed attempts don’t become safe simply because you refill between them.

Check likely air entry points

With power isolated and pressure released as directed, inspect the lid seal and sealing surfaces. Look for grit, cracks, a pinched seal, or the wrong replacement part. Don’t compensate for a poor fit by forcing the lid tighter.

Inspect visible suction connections for damage and note any recent plumbing work. A suction leak may draw air inward while running without leaving an obvious puddle. The absence of water on the ground does not rule it out.

Leave pressure testing and hidden plumbing diagnosis to a qualified technician. Don’t connect compressed air to investigate the suction line yourself. A controlled professional test needs appropriate equipment and limits.

Separate restriction from a failed pump

A blocked basket or obstructed suction path can limit supply. A damaged or obstructed impeller can also reduce pumping, but confirming that may require disassembly. Follow the manual and use qualified service when the work goes beyond accessible owner checks.

Record whether the basket fills partly, whether air grows, and whether returns briefly begin then stop. Also record the selected priming mode. Those observations are more useful than simply reporting that the pump is noisy.

Know when to stop

Stop for dry operation, a new seal leak, repeated protective shutdown, or uncertainty about valve isolation. Don’t disable priming protection or leave the pump unattended to see whether it catches. Correct the cause before returning to the schedule.

Once prime is stable, verify normal flow and inspect for leaks. Record the repair in the maintenance log. If the same failure returns, that record helps distinguish a recurring air leak from an unrelated operating change.
