A pool pump that loses prime overnight may have an air entry path that lets water drain back after shutdown. But a falling basket level alone doesn’t identify the failed component. Equipment height, plumbing layout, and the system’s normal restart behavior also matter.
The useful distinction is timing. If flow fails while the motor is running, begin with pump troubleshooting. If it never establishes prime, use the failure to prime checks instead.
Record the off period
Observe the basket through its lid without opening the system. Note its water level just before shutdown, soon afterward, and before the next scheduled start. Record whether the next start establishes steady circulation normally or runs into a priming fault.
Also note pool mode, spa mode, solar operation, and the equipment’s height relative to the water. A raised circuit may drain differently from a simple pool loop. Describe the pattern before assuming every system should remain identically full.
Don’t keep restarting solely to test your theory. A pump that runs dry or repeatedly fails its priming limit should stay off pending correction. Unattended failed starts can turn a modest sealing fault into additional damage.
Inspect what was recently disturbed
A problem that begins after basket cleaning puts the lid and seal high on the inspection list. Isolate power and release pressure according to the manual. Check for grit, damage, or a seal that didn’t settle into its groove.
Recent valve, union, heater, or solar work is also relevant. Share that history with the service technician. It may explain where air can enter or where water can drain after the pump stops.
Suction connections can admit air without visibly leaking water during operation. Don’t rule out a leak just because the equipment pad is dry. Conversely, don’t smear sealant over every joint and hide the evidence.
A check valve is not an automatic cure
A check valve may have a legitimate role in a particular system. Installing one without understanding the cause can mask a leak or add unwanted flow resistance. Its location, orientation, service access, and compatibility need to suit the plumbing.
If a check valve already exists, a technician can inspect its condition and whether it closes as intended. Don’t dismantle it under pressure. A symptom appearing near a valve is a reason to inspect, not proof that replacement will solve everything.
Decide whether service is needed

After correction, verify both normal circulation and the next off cycle. A pump that works for ten minutes after service hasn’t yet demonstrated that the overnight problem is resolved. Keep the before and after observations in the pool maintenance log.
