How to Read a Cyanuric Acid Turbidity Test

Follow the exact kit’s volumes, mixing time, lighting, and viewing instructions. Different CYA products can use different procedures. Don’t transfer a video demonstration to an unrelated test without checking it.

Prepare the reacted sample correctly

Use a representative pool sample after any recently added stabilizer has had the required time to dissolve and mix. Measure sample and reagent accurately. Cap and mix for the manufacturer’s specified interval before reading.

For applicable Taylor black dot methods, the scale commonly covers 30 to 100 ppm. That does not mean every sample will fall inside it. Record a result outside the range as such rather than forcing an endpoint.

Read the disappearance, not your ability to find the dot

Use the stated outdoor lighting and viewing position. Look straight down as directed rather than tilting the tube toward a bright light. Add sample gradually until the dot just disappears.

Don’t stare until your eyes recover a faint outline and then keep adding indefinitely. Consistent short observations are more repeatable than searching for the dot. Use the same method each time so trends mean something.

The printed scale is not necessarily evenly spaced. Don’t treat equal physical distances between marks as equal concentration changes. Read the manufacturer’s scale at the specified liquid level.

Handle the limits honestly

For an above range sample, use only a manufacturer approved dilution and multiplier. The dilution water and ratio matter. Don’t improvise with pool water of unknown stabilizer content or assume every test permits the same extension.

Investigate inconsistent results

Repeat with a fresh sample if preparation, temperature, cloudiness, or lighting may have affected the reading. Don’t compare a strip and turbidity result as though they have identical resolution. Use the conflicting test guide to check both methods.

A reading shortly after a refill may differ because water wasn’t fully mixed. A reading soon after adding stabilizer may underrepresent undissolved material. Wait according to the product and method instructions before adding another dose.

Use CYA as part of chlorine management
