A pool skimmer float valve that closes isn’t necessarily broken. It may be responding to low water inside the skimmer. Identify the assembly and the reason it closed before resetting it or buying a replacement.

This is the valve beneath the skimmer basket on equipped systems. It is different from the flap at the mouth and from an automatic water fill valve. Those parts need different troubleshooting.

Confirm the installed arrangement first

Find the skimmer housing model and its parts diagram. Check whether a float assembly is specified and how its lower ports are connected. The presence of two holes alone does not prove the system has a functioning equalizer.

For example, an equipped Bermuda skimmer can close its float when water inside falls. Its associated equalizer supplies the alternate path. That behavior depends on the complete arrangement, not simply the shape of the float.

See how to identify skimmer ports if their purposes are unknown. Do not remove the valve permanently to make an uncertain system draw more water.

Separate a triggered closure from a stuck part

What happenedWhat to investigate
Closure followed a water level dropRestore the specified level and investigate why it fell
Closure followed heavy leaf accumulationCheck the basket and weir for restricted water entry
Closure returns under normal conditionsFit, free movement, buoyancy, and the connected arrangement
Flow changed after basket serviceIncorrect reassembly or a displaced lower component

Stop the pump if it draws air or loses its water supply. Prevent automatic restart before opening the skimmer. Never push the float open while suction is active.

Inspect the removable assembly safely

Follow the exact model’s service instructions. Photograph its position before moving permitted removable parts. Note any seal, seat, adjustment plate, and orientation so they return correctly.

Check for trapped debris, damage, and movement that sticks. On a buoyant assembly, a waterlogged component deserves attention. Do not drill, weight, glue, or wedge the float to change how it operates.

An adjustment plate is not a repair for a damaged valve. Preserve its recorded setting unless the manufacturer’s procedure calls for an adjustment. A missing seal or incorrect assembly can matter even when the float itself looks intact.

Reset only after correcting the cause

Use the reset sequence for the installed model. In Pentair’s documented Bermuda equalizer arrangement, shutdown and restoration of the proper water level allow normal valve positions to return. That example is not a universal pushbutton procedure for other skimmers.

Reinstall the basket and secure the lid before restarting. Observe the chamber and return flow from a safe position. If the same closure immediately returns, shut down and investigate further rather than cycling repeatedly.

Choose the right replacement or service call

Order by the housing’s specified part number and applicable revision. A similar diameter does not establish the right seat, seals, or operating behavior. Check whether the replacement includes the required associated parts.

Have a pool professional assess unknown plumbing, damaged seats, or recurring failure after accessible checks. The equalizer and protective suction fittings may need inspection too. Do not alter submerged covers yourself.

For routine care, follow the basket cleaning sequence without disturbing lower components unnecessarily. If the actual symptom is a jammed mouth flap, use the weir troubleshooting guide instead.
