Build a pool maintenance budget from the costs your pool actually creates: energy, water, chemicals, testing, cleaning supplies, service, and eventual repairs. A single national monthly average can hide more than it explains. Climate, season length, equipment, and what a service contract includes all change the total.
Separate recurring operating costs from installation or renovation. Also distinguish cash spent this year from a reserve for future replacement. Otherwise one pump failure can make an ordinary maintenance year look wildly different from the next.

Use the pump electricity worksheet for the first line. Keep heating separate because its usage can dwarf or barely affect the pump bill, depending on your choices. Don’t assume a pool is inexpensive to heat because circulation is efficient.

Suppose an owner budgets $300 for pump energy, $180 for water, $420 for chemicals and testing, and $120 for tools. Add $300 for seasonal service and a $400 repair reserve. The total is $1,720 before heating or any other excluded cost.
That averages about $143.33 per calendar month. It is not a market price estimate or a quote for your pool. The purpose is to show how a complete budget is assembled from explicit assumptions.
If the swimming season lasts five months, dividing by five gives $344 per active month. That does not mean all costs occur only while swimming. Clearly label which monthly figure you are comparing.
Compare service quotes on the same scope
Ask whether the fee includes chemicals, filter cleaning, brushing, vacuuming, water testing, and equipment inspection. Confirm visit frequency and seasonal changes. Ask what happens after storms or an algae event.
Keep repair labor, parts, emergency visits, opening, and closing visible as separate inclusions or exclusions. Two similar monthly prices can buy very different work. Written scope is more useful than a promise of full service.
Find savings that preserve the required care
Check pump scheduling, leaks, unnecessary water replacement, and chemical additions unsupported by tests. A suitable cover can reduce evaporation and heating demand. Follow the cover’s instructions and do not confuse an ordinary cover with a safety barrier.
Buying less excess chemical stock can also reduce waste. Bulk liquid chlorine is only economical if storage and use keep it suitable. Skipping sanitizer or stretching unreliable reagents is not a sound saving.
Replace assumptions with your own records
Record purchases, quantities used, operating settings, and service invoices in the maintenance log. Review after a representative season rather than one unusually quiet month. Separate a preventable problem from normal recurring demand.
