To discourage ducks from using a home pool, remove food attractions and use the existing cover correctly when the pool is unused. Act before birds establish a nest. If eggs or ducklings are present, stop deterrent efforts and get wildlife guidance for that situation.

Earthworms often reach pools during or after rain by crossing wet surrounding surfaces or being carried with runoff. Remove them promptly, then look for the route they used. A recurring pile in the water is usually more useful as a drainage clue than as a reason for extra chemicals.

Bees and wasps around a pool may be collecting water, visiting food scraps, or traveling to a nearby nest. Watch where they land from a safe distance. Reducing the actual attraction is more useful than treating every flying insect as a nest problem.

Springtails in a pool usually need physical removal and a look at the damp areas around it. Skim the insects, keep filtration working, and investigate wet mulch, leaf litter, plant containers, or irrigation. Repeatedly shocking the water will not correct a source in the landscaping.

The most useful vacation preparation is a care plan someone can actually follow while you are gone. Leave the pool in stable condition, confirm who will check it, and rehearse the necessary tasks. Extra chlorine alone cannot empty a basket, notice a leak, or restore a tripped system.

After a storm, first decide whether the pool received ordinary windblown debris or outside floodwater. Then check access and equipment before restarting anything. A leaf covered pool and a flooded equipment pad need different responses.

Choose your pool closing date from the water temperature trend, the local freeze forecast, and your ability to keep the system maintained. Cooler water is usually preferable for seasonal closure, but waiting for a particular reading must not leave equipment exposed to freezing. Book the work before that choice becomes urgent.

The correct winter water level must satisfy your pool, skimmer protection method, and cover instructions together. There is no universal number of inches below the skimmer. Lowering water farther can reduce cover support or conflict with the pool manufacturer’s limits.

Pool antifreeze belongs only where an approved winterization procedure calls for it in the plumbing or equipment. It is not a treatment for keeping the entire pool from freezing. Choose the exact formulation from its label and the equipment instructions, rather than buying by color.

A complete pool plumbing winterization job accounts for every branch that can retain water, including features used only occasionally. Before the contractor arrives, gather the equipment manuals and map the known lines. Ask for a record of how each one was protected.

Choose a pool winter plug by the fitting it must seal, not just the pipe size written on nearby plumbing. A threaded opening needs the correct thread and seal arrangement. A rubber expansion plug needs the correct working size and seating depth for its intended use.

Freeze protection can keep a pool pump running after its normal schedule ends. That is expected while the controller still detects cold conditions. If it keeps running in warm weather, compare the controller’s air reading, its release temperature, and the command actually running the pump.
