Solar Pool Cover Reel: Sizing and Placement Guide

Choose a solar cover reel that fits the blanket, pool and storage space. Check tube limits, wet weight, mounting and removal geometry.
Choose a reel for the whole blanket. Width alone is not enough. Check length and wet load. Match tube and attachment limits. Conceptual illustration.

A solar pool cover reel needs to carry the whole wet blanket, not merely span the pool. Check width, blanket length, permitted thickness and weight together. Then confirm where the reel and its full roll can stand without obstructing pool access.

Buy the end supports and tube set as a compatible system. Some listings sell them separately. A reel end kit alone may not include the tube required for your pool width.

Measure the working layout

Sketch the water outline, deck and fixed obstacles. Mark steps, rocks, ladders and narrow walkways. Draw a possible reel location and the direction the blanket will travel.

Measure the water width at that location and the space for both supports. Include handle clearance and the height of the stored roll. Do not assume the pool’s advertised width gives the complete installation dimension.

For a wheeled reel, measure the route to its storage position too. Check slopes, thresholds and the available turning room. A mobile reel still needs a stable operating position and its specified wheel locks or stops.

Check all the capacity limits

LimitWhy width alone misses it
Maximum cover length or areaA longer sheet makes a larger, heavier roll
Maximum wet cover weightWater and material load the tube and supports
Blanket thickness and constructionA thicker or different bubble sheet may exceed the recommendation
Maximum tube extensionExcess extension reduces structural overlap
Minimum tube overlapToo little engagement can damage joints and fasteners
Compatible end and tube partsSimilar diameters do not establish system compatibility

Use the lowest applicable limit across the complete system. Do not exceed one because all the others pass. Ask the manufacturer when a blanket’s weight or construction is not documented.

FeherGuard’s current Blanket Handler and Wheels Reel instructions illustrate this approach. They list separate width, wet weight, cover size and overlap limits by tube set. A single headline such as fits 20 foot pools leaves out those distinctions.

Also check the exact instruction revision. Older recommendations may differ from the current approved blanket thickness. Do not apply an old online chart to a newly supplied reel without confirmation.

Choose a location that lets the cover travel

An end position can offer straightforward rolling on a rectangular pool. A freeform pool may work better at a wider section, if the reel design allows it. Some low profile models are intended only for an end location.

A center position folds portions of the blanket together as it rolls. That changes the attachment and length allowance. Plan it before cutting the blanket.

Projecting steps or narrow curves may need approved folding arrangements. Do not assume a bigger reel solves every shape problem. A protrusion can still snag on coping even when the tube is wide enough.

Ask the supplier to review your sketch for a difficult shape. Include the storage position and who will operate it. A useful installation should allow complete removal without dragging the sheet over rocks or sharp edges.

Above ground mounting needs approval

Use a reel designed for the pool’s construction. Some systems mount to suitable rails, some rest on specified supports, and others use adjacent decking. Those load paths are not interchangeable.

Do not drill a portable pool frame or thin top rail simply because a bracket can be made to fit. Obtain the pool and reel manufacturer’s approval. Mounting that damages structural parts is not corrected by adding extra screws.

For a swing away or lift off arrangement, check the required support points and handling instructions. The full wet roll may need more than one person. Confirm how it is secured when not over the pool.

A reel and its attachments are not a handrail or climbing aid. Keep their placement consistent with the pool’s access protections. Do not create an easy route over a barrier.

Compare manual and powered operation

A manual handle may be adequate when the blanket rolls freely and the user can manage it. Powered operation can reduce effort, but does not fix poor fit or an overloaded tube. Check the drive, charging or electrical requirements for the exact product.

Consider both removal and replacement. Pulling the cover back across an irregular pool can be harder than winding it in. Ask how the system controls that step without unsafe reaching.

Do not adapt a drill or improvised motor unless the manufacturer provides an approved drive arrangement. Excess speed or torque can damage the blanket and reel. Keep hands and clothing clear of rotating parts.

Set up the attachments evenly

Follow the specified strap number, spacing and attachment method. Check that the blanket begins winding evenly rather than bunching toward one side. Do not compensate for an incorrectly positioned reel with random strap lengths.

Install tube joints to the required overlap and fastening sequence. Keep the supplied assembly instructions for future adjustment. Do not extend the tube after assembly without checking all limits again.

Stop if the tube bows abnormally, supports move or the sheet catches. Review load and fit before continued use. A harder turn on the handle is not a substitute for correct alignment.

Plan storage protection as part of the purchase

The rolled blanket needs its approved protective cover when off the water. Sunlight concentrated in the layers can damage it. Include that accessory and a suitable storage location in the budget.

Keep the roll away from sharp objects and prevent unintended movement. Do not leave loose straps across walking areas. Follow seasonal cleaning and storage when removing the equipment from service.

Before ordering, check the full parts list, blanket limits, mounting approval and storage dimensions. Those four checks prevent more problems than choosing by width alone. Use solar blanket selection if the cover itself is still undecided.
