Changing sand in a pool filter starts with identifying the tank and its loading instructions. Then the system must be isolated, depressurized, opened correctly, emptied, inspected, refilled, and recommissioned. The fragile parts inside deserve as much attention as the new sand.

Before changing sand in a pool filter
First confirm why you’re replacing it. Age alone doesn’t identify a fault. Use the sand replacement decision guide if the diagnosis is still uncertain.
Write a short job sheet from the exact manual. Include the model, manual revision, approved media, quantity, freeboard, closure procedure, and startup sequence. Photograph the original plumbing and valve positions.
Top mounted and side mounted valves create different access problems. Don’t cut fixed plumbing simply because another filter’s video shows it. If access requires plumbing changes, arrange the right service before draining the system.
Have the materials and disposal plan ready
- The exact approved media and a way to measure any partial bag.
- The tools specified for the closure and installed fittings.
- Suitable collection equipment for wet sand, with its electrical and wet use instructions followed.
- Replacement seals or parts only where inspection or the manual requires them.
- Protection for open piping, sealing surfaces, and removed components.
- The protective equipment required by the media label and safety data sheet.
Arrange disposal before you start. Wet media can be heavy and messy. Keep it out of storm drains, and follow local disposal requirements.
Check the sand quantity and configuration before opening bags. Buying enough media is different from emptying every bag into the tank.
1. Isolate the system and release pressure
Follow the manual to shut down the pump and prevent timers or automation from restarting it. Disconnect the appropriate power as directed. Turn off dependent equipment using its required shutdown sequence.
Release pressure through the designated manual air relief and wait for the system to depressurize. Verify the gauge reads zero, but don’t rely on a possibly faulty gauge alone. Do not loosen a clamp, valve, or lid to release pressure.
A filter below the water level may need model specific isolation to prevent water continuously entering. Only use confirmed valves in the instructed positions. Keep a record so the normal flow path can be restored before startup.
2. Drain and open the correct access point
Drain the tank as instructed. Remove the valve or access closure using the exact procedure for that assembly. Place removed parts on a clean surface where sealing faces won’t be scratched.
Don’t lift a large valve by attached pipes or strain the plumbing for extra clearance. Don’t pry against the tank flange. Stop if corroded hardware, distorted parts, or damaged threads prevent normal disassembly.
Photograph the exposed internal arrangement before moving anything. Some distributors move out of the way; others must remain in place. The parts diagram should settle that question.
3. Protect open piping and remove old media gently
Where the design has an exposed standpipe, protect its opening as directed so sand can’t enter. Keep the pipe correctly located. Don’t use it as a handle or lever.
Remove media with a suitable method that won’t strike or pull the collectors. A compatible wet vacuum or small scoop may be useful. Follow the tool instructions and avoid creating airborne silica dust.
Work more carefully as the laterals become exposed. Don’t drag rigid tools across them or twist the assembly through packed sand. The aim is to uncover components without creating a new leak path.
4. Inspect before the new sand hides the evidence
Check visible laterals, hubs, piping, and seals against the parts diagram. Look for cracks, enlarged openings, loose joints, and incorrect assembly. If sand was returning to the pool, inspect that route especially carefully.
Don’t automatically replace every internal part because it’s exposed. Replace damaged or required components with the exact approved parts. Conversely, don’t bury a questionable lateral just to finish the job.
Inspect the closure, tank opening, gauge, and air relief too. Structural damage is a stop point. A tank patch or improvised closure repair isn’t part of a sand change.
5. Refill to the approved configuration
Reassemble the internals in the correct position. Add the cushioning water specified by the manual before pouring media. The referenced Triton and Hayward instructions use water to reduce the impact on internal components.
Add the approved media carefully, following any layer sequence. Keep protected openings clear and internal piping correctly aligned. Measure the required freeboard from the manual’s reference point.
Don’t substitute a universal “two thirds full” rule for the actual specification. If the measured level and expected load disagree, pause and resolve the cause. Media density, an incorrect model, or a different configuration may explain it.
6. Reassemble and follow the startup sequence
Remove temporary pipe protection before reassembly. Clean sealing surfaces without damaging them. Fit seals and lubricants only as the manufacturer specifies.
Use the exact closure procedure, including any torque or clamp checks. Don’t copy a torque value from another tank. Confirm that all intended flow paths are restored before starting the system.
New media generally needs the specified initial cleaning sequence to remove fines. Follow the manual’s backwash and rinse directions where applicable. Stop the pump between valve changes and stand clear during startup.

7. Verify the result before calling the job finished
Check for leaks, abnormal pressure, air release problems, and normal return flow. Shut down promptly if an unsafe condition appears. Never tighten a leaking closure while the system runs.
Record the media and amount used, date, clean pressure, pump setting, and operating mode. Keep the previous readings. If pressure is still abnormal, a refill hasn’t automatically established a healthy new baseline.
Watch for persistent sand discharge after the specified startup process. Use the sand returning to pool guide if it continues. Don’t keep running the system and assume every deposit will eventually clear itself.
