Winterizing an above ground pool while leaving it assembled is appropriate only when the pool manufacturer allows that route for your climate. Some portable frame and inflatable ring pools require draining and storage in cold weather. A permanent wall pool and a seasonal pool should not inherit the same closing instructions.
Start with the exact model manual and the cover instructions. If they require storage, follow that process rather than this assembled closing route. Intex’s support guidance explicitly separates leaving an eligible pool up from draining and storing it.
Confirm structure and water condition
Inspect the wall, supports, liner, fittings, and ground around the pool. Resolve leaks or instability before closing. Do not drain a permanent pool completely simply because a portable pool guide recommends it.
Remove debris and clean surfaces with compatible tools. Test and adjust the water using the requirements for the pool and treatment products. A closed pool still needs an appropriate water management plan.
Plan the level around the actual fittings and cover
Follow the specified closing water level and approved protection for the skimmer and returns. Some systems use particular closures or plugs; others require different arrangements. Do not assume that lowering below the skimmer is correct for every cover and wall system.
Keep rain and snow management in the plan. Water level can change after closing, and a cover can place unintended loads on the structure. Follow the maker’s instructions for removing excess cover water without damaging the cover or draining the pool unintentionally.
Disconnect and drain accessories as directed
Isolate power and follow the pump and filter shutdown procedures. Drain removable hoses and equipment fully where instructed. Store components only in conditions their manuals allow.

Do not blow compressed air through an assembled system without an approved professional procedure. Do not leave powered equipment exposed to an accidental automatic restart after draining. Tag or document the disabled setup clearly.
Fit the cover without treating it as a safety barrier
Use the correct cover size, attachments, and any specified support accessories. An air pillow may have a defined role in a particular cover system, but it is not universal protection against every ice load. Follow the instructions instead of overinflating or improvising weights.
An ordinary debris cover does not replace required barriers or a rated safety cover. Secure ladders and access as required. Keep children and pets away from the covered pool.
Inspect during winter
Check the cover, attachments, water level, and visible structure at the prescribed intervals and after significant weather. Do not walk on the cover or break ice against the liner. Get help if the wall or cover is under abnormal strain.
