Type A or C pool filters are sometimes sold under a combined A/C label, but the letters aren’t a universal compatibility standard. Match the cartridge to the exact pump or filter model. Then confirm its dimensions and sealing ends.
A product fitting inside the housing isn’t enough. It must seat correctly so water passes through the media instead of around it.
When A or C pool filters can be interchangeable
Interchangeability is established when the manufacturer or a reliable replacement catalog explicitly lists both applications for that cartridge. A retailer’s “A/C” title is a starting point, not the final check. The compatible model list should include your equipment.
For example, Intex lists its 29000E Type A cartridge for pump models 28603EG, 28637EG, and 28635EG. Polygroup separately sells an A/C cartridge under model P57100204099. Those listings do not establish compatibility between every product carrying either letter.
Use this order when checking a replacement
- Read the equipment label and record the complete model number, including its suffix.
- Find the specified cartridge part number in that model’s manual.
- Check whether the proposed replacement explicitly cross references that part or equipment.
- Compare length, outside diameter, both openings, and the end cap shape.
- Confirm the pack contains the required cartridge rather than a similar looking size.
If the label and the existing cartridge disagree, investigate before buying. A previous owner may have installed an incorrect element. The worn cartridge is evidence to compare, not an authority that overrides the manual.
Similar measurements can still hide a poor fit
The end caps help position and seal the cartridge. Differences in the openings, shoulders, or material can matter even when overall dimensions look close. Don’t trim, stretch, or compress an element to make it fit.
Use our cartridge measurement guide if the old part number is unreadable. Take pictures of both ends as well as the housing label. A supplier can compare those details against a documented cross reference.
Check installation without forcing the housing
Follow the pump’s shutdown and cartridge replacement instructions. Don’t tighten the lid harder to compensate for an element that is too tall. Incorrect fit can affect sealing and damage components.
After the prescribed restart, check circulation and leaks. If flow remains poor, investigate the filter system rather than assuming another letter type will solve it. Dirty media and incorrect fit are different problems.
Keep the confirmed replacement number with your pool equipment records. For larger filter systems, use the broader replacement cartridge identification guide. A small pool cartridge label doesn’t transfer to those systems.
