A pool skimmer not suctioning needs a whole system check before a pipe blockage diagnosis. Compare the return flow, pump basket, operating schedule, and any other skimmer. That tells you whether water movement is weak everywhere or mainly at this branch.
Do not test an open suction hole with your hand or plug other outlets to force a result. Observe from outside the water and follow safe shutdown before removing baskets. Suction protection must remain intact.
Decide whether the loss is local
| Observation | Useful next question |
|---|---|
| All returns and skimmers seem weak | Did speed, priming, filter condition, or a shared valve mode change? |
| Another skimmer works normally | Is this basket, weir, valve, or branch different? |
| Water enters but leaves stay outside | Is this a surface capture problem rather than a suction loss? |
Compare the same pump speed and operating mode. A low speed filtration period cannot be fairly compared with a previous cleaner cycle. Write down the conditions before adjusting them.
Check water entry at the mouth
Confirm the pool water level meets the skimmer’s requirements. Look for a weir held shut by debris or an incorrectly fitted replacement. A restricted mouth can starve the well even when the buried line is clear.
Shut down before inspecting or freeing accessible parts. Use the weir door procedure if that component is stuck. Do not remove it permanently to avoid fixing the cause.
Check the basket for accumulated debris and correct seating. Follow the basket cleaning steps. A clogged basket is a restriction that should be resolved before more invasive investigation.
Look for a closed float or changed valve path
Some skimmers have a float assembly below the basket. Its action depends on the documented plumbing configuration. If it closed after low water, restore the cause and follow its proper reset procedure.
Do not lift out an unfamiliar lower assembly and assume it is optional. Use the float valve guide. A second port may belong to an equalizer or other intended water path.
At the equipment area, compare labeled valve positions with the normal record. Recent vacuuming or spa operation may have changed routing. If labels are missing, have the plumbing paths identified rather than trying every handle combination.
If the pump is not moving water normally
Air accumulation, loss of prime, or unstable return flow points beyond the skimmer mouth. Use the pump basket air checks. Do not keep running a pump that cannot establish normal circulation.
Check filter condition against its clean baseline under comparable settings. Pressure alone is not a flow measurement. Use the equipment’s cleaning instructions instead of assuming a higher pressure always calls for the same action.
Leave line clearing to the right procedure
If one branch remains weak after accessible checks, record exactly what changed and what did not. A buried obstruction, leak, or valve fault needs proper diagnosis. Do not insert a pressure bladder, compressed air line, or improvised probe into unknown plumbing.
Tell the technician whether the fault is new, whether another skimmer works, and whether the pump loses prime. Provide the model and operating settings. These comparisons help focus testing without claiming that one symptom proves a blocked pipe.
If water flow is adequate but debris still misses the mouth, switch to the surface collection investigation. That problem can persist even after the suction system is functioning normally.
